Unhappy Is this the infamous window regulator problem?

OK, this is weird. From what I've read in regards to the regulator problem there never was any hesitation w/ my window going up or down and I never heard any weird noises (i.e., cracking, crunching, etc...)

Last night I was driving on the fwy when I thought I heard wind noise. I thought my driver side window wasn't all the way up so I pulled up on the window switch but instead of going up the window began to go down. WTF? I pulled on the window switch again and this time the window stopped halfway. I pulled on the window switch for the 3rd time only to have the window go completely all the way down. After that it was dead. No matter what I did nothing worked. I had to cruise the rest of the way on the fwy w/ my window down. Thank gawd the weather has been beautiful.

So is this regulator problem or something completely different? I forgot to mention if I put my ear to the driver door and pull the window switch I can hear a distinct click but thats it. I drive a '01 330ci.

Thanks for any help/tips.

I would try holding the down switch or up switch for 15 seconds (one at a time)....that usually solves the up and down hesitation every 2 seconds.

But, if you are getting nothing now, then you have a switch problem.

Should you determine that the contacts are clean and your switch is functioning, then it is likely that the motor has burned out and is in need of replacing. Installing a BMW window regulator or a regulator for any other make the steps involved in replacing a window regulator are usually quite similar:

1. Remove the door panel for the affected window.

2. Locate and remove the bolts holding the regulator to the door; it is likely you will have to manually lower the window in order to access the bolts.

3. Remove the old regulator, disconnect all wiring, and replace the old regulator with a new one you have purchased from a parts supplier. Shop online to find the best value as you will pay a mint if you order one through a dealership.

4. Tighten the bolts holding the new regulator and reinstall the moisture barrier. Make sure all the wires are put back in the door before closing the door panel.

5. Engage the power window switch and the new regulator should work unimpeded.

Of course, follow your car’s repair manual for specific instructions.

Goodluck buddy!
