New here, with a 330XI issue
Hi, I'm new here. I had my BMW for two years now. While my car was on a warranty, I brouht my car in for repair because I noticed that one of my mufflers was always spotless while the other was blackened with dust. They told me nothing was wrong and that one was used for the city and one was used for the highway. Now that I'm off warranty and my check engine light turned on, I came back in there. It turns out that the engine isn't getting enough air from the exhaust. So now they want ~$135 for the repair and I was wondering if any of you guys can tell me where to get another stock exhaust for cheap or tell me how to fix the current one? Thanks.
330 exhaust has two pipes coming out, one of which has a flap that opens and closes. this might be the problem?
there is a vacuum line that runs to that pipe(it the one on the right on my 330) check to make sure thats still attached. the line is under the bumper abov the pipe right after the muffler.
otherwise $135 doesnt seem too bad for a dealership repair.
but i would check that vacuum line.
otherwise i would check out E46 fanatics, they have a lot of information on E46 models..just search and see what you come up with.

yes, i second that, there are two exhaust pipes, one opens up at higher RPM and makes the sound less muffled, actually theres this one really great diagram that i cant seem to find

Numark318i and xsperf for the reply, I'll wait to see if I can fix it. If not I'll get them to repair it, it's not the cash but more like the principle. Why would they wait till I'm out of my warranty and then say there's something wrong with it? That's why I'm going to fix it myself and save some cash. Thanks for the reply.

Sorry about that, thanks... to xsperf and numark318i and possibly drz. Well it turns out that the service engine light was on because of a previous servious. This actually cause my engine to almost blow up and now I need a new engine. What makes it worse is that my warranty is out in July. Dayton's BMW service sucks. At least I got to rent the 2007 330xi.

Thanks for the help, that cleared it up. Turns out that the car that I got as a rental is a 2007 328i. It's okay. What do you think about putting on an aftermarket muffler? Is there a kind or brand you prefer? A good one?
