E46 problems

I have an2002 330d .Recently the turbo has blown and I have been told by BMW UK that I need a new engine !
I was wondering if anybody had a first hand experience or know somebody that it happened to.
Would it be ok just to change the turbo or should I take the head off and check for damage?

what caused the turbo to blow? mileage? need alot more info to help you out. Just by what you have given us, I'd be interested in what caused the turbo to blow. Usually it's from over-revs or lack of lubrication - in either case I'd be going through motor (as suggested) just to make sure there wasn't more damage than just the turbo.
