Magnet attached to oil pan ????
Someone suggested that I should attach a magnet to the bottom of my oil pan . When the car rests overnight and all oil is in the pan, metal particles will get attracted to the magnet. And when you drain the oil, all those metal particles will get drained.
Is there any truth in this?
It would have to be one helluva a magnet. Alot of particles would be aluminum also (which isn't magnetic) - just change your oil and filter at 3k intervals is your best bet. Note: Auto trans has a magnet in the pan that needs cleaning when trans fluid is changed.
Yeah the magnet wouldn't attract a lot of the particles in the oil unless it was some kind of huge super magnet. Then you'd have bigger problems than the particles in your oil.
Actually fellas, it's done all the time, and it's particularly effective with magnesium or aluminum oil pans. The magnet is attached outside the pan (non-magnetically), so any ferric-metallic particles get stuck to the inside wall. When you change your oil, remove the magnet before draining, and those particles will be released and you'll get it flowing out as you drain. It won't catch a lot, as c1apton cited that a lot of metal will not be ferrous, but it does work. My brother does it, but personally, I don't bother.
they also makes those drain plugs that are magnetic too. if i ever changed my plug, i would get one, just because it wouldnt hurt, but like everyone else said, i dont have any restless nights because of it.

i've never heard of a magnet in the oil pan, and like c1apton said there's one in the trans fluid sump in an auto trans, i'm guessing for the same purpose?

there is a group buy on bimmer forums for magnetic drain plugs. They seem to work well judging by the rate they are selling. I am hoping it doesn't just provide a false sense of security though.
^^^ when i once younger i helped change the oil in my grandfathers truck. i ended up stripping the plug (luckily the pan was fine). we bought a plug with a magnetic tip, and when i pulled it out next time it had a bunch of crap stuck to it.

Umnitza now provides a mechanic to install all parts ordered right in the box! It's their new "Total customer service program" that will eliminate all the haters and keep incompetents from breaking **** and blaming the vendor! When you are all set simply call INS and they will pick him up free of charge.
