Brake Light Failure
1998 328is right brake light failure. After changing the failed right brake light, the new bulb(s) tried two new ones, the new bulbs would not work either. Carefully cleaned all contacts and retried, but still no brake lights. The car has been parked for about 15 days. All other rear lights are working properly, including the left brake light.
Any ideas???

Does your OBC (computer below your air conditioning) say tail light failure, or tail light circuit failure?
It might be a wiring issue.
Try taking the old (bad) bulb out of the right tail light and seeing if it turns on in the left side. If it does, it's something beyond the bulb, like wiring.

Like what defkon99 said, try switching the sockets and see if the OBC shows any message. Heard from mechs of the local bimmer dealer that after a period of 7-8 years, the inner PCB tends to bloat / gloat or bend due to the heat generated by the brake light bulbs.
Also you may notice a slight burn-out or short-circuited crater in the contact points.

Switched bulbs and switched sockets, light remained out. Is the PCB the gasket?

PCB stands for the Printed Circuit Board, similar to waht we get in handphones. A simpler version to connect the circuitry. Worst case,. look for a replacement. I guess some UB memberd might have a set lying around after their upgrade. GOOD LUCK.

I was getting this too on my car. I checked all the socket connections and made sure they were clean before replacing them. When I did that it turned off the warning message in the dash. I was also told to replace the "Brake Light Circuit" underneath the dash. I didn't have to go that route yet but it's an inexpensive part to buy; just cumbersome to snap it out and replace.
