e36 auto tranny?

So I've been reading alot....and to be honest it's gotten me scared. it seems alot of people think the auto trannys on these bimmers are garbage?
now is this something I should expect blowing out here soon 122k on the clock btw
or is it hit and miss.
or more like a 200k thing.

plz tell me it's not something that happens to everyone.

and is there anything that i can do to help/prevent it.

Well, that just about sums it up. I've said this before, and I'll mention it again- the only time people write things is when they have something to complain about. Tell me this: how many people have you read about who were totally ecstatic and happy about how well their tranny runs? I rest my case

If it ain't broke, don't sweat it. If you want peace of mind, change out the fluid in it. Beyond that, don't take everything you read to mean that it will happen to you; odds are that they won't

yea, drive nicely, dont shift up and down every two seconds like woman, and just to boost ur hopes, ive seen so many bmw 7's with 200k+ original tranny

yeah true. I guess since my car has 122k on it I should do a tranny flush....but Should i trust valvoline? and is it even a good idea

btw...How can u tell if ur tranny is even slipping anyways?

I notice sometimes I'll accelerate slowly then ill kinda put the gas on more a lil and it'll jump down a gear real quick so it can accelerate faster I suppose? is that normal, but thats only when im from a standstop. and it's only if I accelerate slowly then put on the gas more. plz tell me this is normal. I mean it accelerates when i put on the gas everytime. it's just if Im going slow from a stop then put on the gas a lil more it'll jump down a gear it seems like. but I suppose it's supposed to do that?

and btw whats the 7's with 200k mean anyways? I suppose big cars need tranny rebuilds faster than our smaller cars?

Yeah, I've an '86 L7 with over 250k on the original drivetrain - no issues to speak of.

Yeah, I've an '86 L7 with over 250k on the original drivetrain - no issues to speak of. As long as a car is taken care of you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Sure, there's always a chance that a tranny here and there have issues that'll bite someone in the ass due to a minor production flaw or something. Chances are small though.

When accelerating it should downshift once you put a certain ammount of throttle to it. If the throttle increase is very gradual it shouldn't downshift, but once the increase is great enough in a short period of time (varies from model to model, make, year, etc.) it will downshift one, or more, gears depending on the ammount of throttle given.

I would say it's acting fince. If, when shifting, it hits hard into the next gear - jarring you - or doesn't shift at the proper rpms you need to have it serviced/looked at... though it could just be a vacuum line or the linkage, better to question it and have it checked then to have the whole thing crap out on you while going down the road.

oh no it shifts perfectly at everytime (exceptwhen cold it can take some time to shift for a few min until it warms up but i KNOW thats normal)

and no it doesnt jar me. i just know if u floor it, and let ur foot off then put it back again even slightly it'll do a rev rev kinda thing. but i guess the pedal is sensitive and I have a tendency to take my foot of and put it back on for like a split second

Then I'd deffinately say it's fine. You'll know it's slipping when it doesn't shift when it should, shifts erratically (indecisive about what gear it wants to be in), and shifts hard. Until then I wouldn't frett. Usually it'll be a gradual change you will notice if it's going to go out - usually. But as I said, I've got over 250k on my tranny and it's smooth as silk.

yea ddue ur car is fine, i meant with the 7's with 200k like QcMarque that i have seen many 7 series cars with over 200,000 miles on the odometer with original tranny

ive seen an auto tranny slip, it was actually leaking fluid so he was very low, but you come to accelerate its 'ok' but if you give it a decent amount of gas it will make ahorrible noise(just like two things slipping) and the car wont go anywhere

$250 is a whole lot cheaper than a $3500 transmission maybe your expert who repaired your valve cover(3 times) can do it
