Question Advice on new DIY project... E30 M10 water pump

Alright, now the next project for my sister's car is a overhaul on the cooling system. The system has absolutely no pressure build up. And the car leaks coolant like crazy, but not from the radiator (it was just worked on a year ago too). My thought? Bad seal in the water pump.

Pelican Parts says that if there is no build up a pressure in the tube between the top of the radiator and something else (can't remember), then you're water pump is probably bad. Alse Pelican says that if there is a leak from near the block, your water pump gasket is bad and leaking.

So, replacing the water pump could potentially solve this problem. Here's the problem, my dad's all about spending money on this car. He wants to replace the entire water pump, the thermostat and change the belts at the same time. Guess who gets to do that? Yep, your's truely.

Here's the real question: where can I find the specs for a E30? i.e. the belt tensions, anything else I might need? Also, any helpful comments would be great. This might be bigger than the strut/shock/brake summer of this year.

Actually, this is looking really easy. If it is, expect a DIY from this little project.

The hardest part (if any) is getting the fan clutch off it, other than that it should be "cake" for you babe.

I also have the TIS for most all Bimmers... information covered varies from model top model, but if needed I can make an iso of it or mail copies out (also have the ETK, ETM, WDS, and a couple others... all genuine BMW software)

yea as c1apton said,t he fan clutch is tricky, actually they sell a tool that is for 10 dollars, its basically a hting that holds the fan clutch so it wont spin while you take the little bolts off, you could probably fabricate one, or just shove a wrench in there so it wont move

Wow, good thing I asked. xperf or c1apton, could I aquire one of these tools from an AutoZone or are they specialty BMW tools that no one has? Also, is it something that I can do without (i.e. improvise like I do on most of my DIYs and combine 4 tools I have into this one special tool?)

And QMarque, what exactly is a TIS? I might want that...

It's a specialty BMW tool (Pelican Parts #PEL-TOL-3008), and actually, it holds the little bolts so you can remove the big reverse thread fan clutch nut. But really, it's not worth buying. You can use a large allen key or screwdriver to jam between the bolts, or even make your own tool easily. I used the large screwdriver method myself.

TIS= BMW Technical Information System software. It's kinda like realoem.com and the Bentley manual combined together.

No problem... I'll setup an FTP server and post the link in a members only area.

And actually the TIS is just the repair manual portion that BMW shops use... the ETK is the realoem portion, plus I have the ETM (electronic troubleshooting manual) and WDS (wiring diagram systems) If I can aquire the space on my system to host 'em all I'll do that (a total of about 7-8 gigs... startin to run low on the home PC) Otherwise I'll just host a couple at a time and if people need one or the other I can host them on request - hell, the computer's always on may as well do something with it.

it should be up later tonight or by tomorrow morning at the latest --- off to work on the hosting setup.

QcMarque, Thank You! For me, and most other members, the E30 and E36 TIS ones are needed.

Thanks again.
