E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
Well i have a couple problems with my car right now and its pissing me off. Now remmber i live in Canada and its currently -30C right now so the cold may have something to with these.
First: When ever i turn the wheel 45* theres this wierd ratching noise. Like a socket wrench but softer and smoother. I have no idea what it is or what would cause it
Second: My door isnt closing. The mecanism that holds the door shut doesnt seem to wanna hold on. For some reason it wont grasp or lock. I cant even pull the lock nob on the door, the only way the door will actually stay closed is if i hold the door closed and then lock the car.
Now the second problem is the bigger one cause its hella cold and i have a 20min drive to and from work. I need my car bad so is this gonna be a big thing or is just because its spend so much time outside? It didnt do this last winter and it was just as cold out.
Re: problem #1 - it's pretty tough to diagnose without seeing & hearing it, could be anything from steering rack to power steering pump or front end parts
Re: #2 - you have it partially lock/latch jam. If you pull door panel off you'll probably notice or find clip missing or broken holding lock arm off or missing. Try working the lock from the outside w/key to see if it's just jammed or inbetween the actual lock settings.
