Yeah, a valve gasket is quite minor and really should be done at home (unless it's covered by a service warranty on a new car... never do anything yourself you can get for free... lol)
^^^I don't know about that. Your mechanic might not be aware that even with a new gasket install, you still have to put black RTV silicone in certain spots; one of which is I believe the area you mentioned. Here's a good writeup:
ur prolly right tho. all I know is that it is fixed finally. I was worried it was the head gasket....but i was like. for a bmw....thats not common.
Finally all my repairs are done.
I looked back and thought..man this car has been a money pit and is unreliable.
but then again. everything else was stuff i did on my own (paint, etc..)
i mean the only things I've "NEEDED" to replace are Valve cover, and 02 sensor, and well the ignition coil...So it's been good. i mean it is old.
the rest I did for maintinence purposes

head gaskets fail all the time on these cars..... it is a common problem.
well yes bmw does have problem with cooling system, but u cant say bmw head gaskets fail alot under normal circumstances. but yes if ur car overheats that is what causes it? correct
but normally if it didnt overheat we couldnt say it was a common or even uncommon problem.
cause i dont hear about it happening that much, unless it overheats
but if ur car blows a water pump........pull over asaP :_D
