O2 Sensor replacement - United Bimmer Community

This is more of a poll about oxygen sensor replacement.

If you have changed your O2 sensors, how much trouble, if you had any, in removing the old sensor?

Only trouble would be seizing up and tring to get it loose.. really...

I'm actually curious if anyone could not remove the old one at all.

I removed mine in 2 minutes... get some "bolt" loosener and spray it on, there and go for it.. use a little muscle and it'll come off.

I couldnt get mine off. I could not get enough leverage. I didnt have the proper O2 removal tool tho. Had a local shop do it for $20. Money well spent.. In all fairness the guy said there was no way I would have gotten it off in my driveway..

as a continuation for this thread how many O2 sensors are on a 96 328is. i have heard everything from one, two, or four.

how much do they cost?

On OBD II cars, 1996 onward, you should have 2 per catalytic converter. Since you have 2 cats, 4 sensors. I haven't had to buy one yet, so not sure how much they cost.

they arent cheap..like $85 is the cheapest i've seen from bimmerworld.. OBDII cars I thought had 2 pre cat sensors and 2 post cat sensors- 4 total. And that they only have one cat.. That is what I've been told

I only see one behind my cat. so I have a total of two.
ODBII 98 323is
but then again, I have a single pipe all the way back.

The 1996 and onward have the same number of cats (2) as the earlier models of the E36. The exceptions are the 323 and the 318.

if i get an OBDII scan, will it tell me which ones have failed?

Yes, it should. I don't remember the exact terminology the scan uses though.

Yes it will, I think mine is bad, the code it gave me was:

P0155 code: O2 Sensor B2 S1 Htr Circuit Malfunction . So, the 02 sensor of the second bank sensor 1 has a heater circuit malfunction.

I only remember seeing one cat on my old xpipe... are you sure my car had 2?
