E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
I never knew injectors made noise . I have a ticking under my hood and a friend said it's the injector. Has anyone ever had this problem or noise. It's fricken annoying. I've searched for diy or something to tell me how to check for sure. Is it easy to change? Any help would be greatly appreciated before I put her to sleep for the winter. thanks
I highly doubt you'ld hear a ticking injector - you'ld get an erratic idle & drivabilty problems before you'ld hear it. I'd guess it's lifter noise, maybe timing chain, etc - especially since cooler/colder weather is more frequent. Try a good healthy oil change.
Figured you would respond."Master"
Just changed the oil like 800kms ago. So do you recommend taking off the valve cover and listening more closely?
nah, no master...lol, - just make note(s) when the noise is most evident -cold or hot, low or high RPMs, which side of motor noise is coming from, etc... You don't need to pull valve cover - you can use a chunk of heater hose or garden hose & use as a stethescope and listen by placing hose on different sections of motor, head, to narrow down where the actual "ticking" is coming from. A small exhaust leak can make a ticking noise, for that matter a sticking exhaust valve can cause a ticking noise (similar to header noise/tick) Also note what did you do to it last before noise became evident.
Keep me posted
I would guess it's just something simple like the timing chain tensioner needs adjusting. Especially after an oil change. (might have losen some gunk w/the fresh oil -part #s 17 & 18)
What weight oil are you currently using and how many miles on car? Before you do any oil changing - you might try a small dose of Sea Foam or Rislone, or Marvel Oil supplements. These are detergent additives that might "un-gum" internals.
