E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
Hey all, I have been noticing lately that when I accelerate from a stop, I hear a little clicking sound. When I let off the gas it stops. To me, this sounds like an exhaust-related problem, because the sound is coming from behind me, and is louder when I have the windows open. Has anyone experienced this before?

Could be a heat shield or other piece of protective metal coming undone, not at all uncommon, generally benign. When I flushed my cooling system a few months back I found a loose piece of disconnected something-or-other, looked like some sort of bracket, nestled by the engine block. Best to get under the car and take a look at all the protective shielding, as well as any clamps that may have come undone, especially if attached to or supporting the exhaust. You may have to improvise a bit if you want to reattach or resecure any loose pieces, chances are the nuts or studs have snapped off.

I could, but I actually haven't been hearing it lately. It would also be hard because I would need to make a sound clip while driving and accelerating. I have also since heard a whistling sound coming from the engine, and concluded that it is the ICV. I bought a new one, and I am installing it tomorrow. Could the two be related in some way?

If its clicking, try checking the valve lifters. I experienced the sounds and upon checking, I found out that the valve lifters were faulty.
I was recommended to change them. My mileage is 135K. Recommend that you buy the originals...the OEM's will produce the clicking sounds after a few weeks. Goodluck..

The valve lifters are approx USD 36 (I think). Since the one making the clicking sound cannot be distinguished, all 24 of them have to replaced. Takes about 2-3 hours. Also do check for some minitiare parts that are below the liftersm they may need to be changed too. GOOD LUCK.
OK well i thnk i can relate, does it sound somewhat louder at about 15-20 mph rolling>? and can you hear this click on turns coming from the back? anything over 20mph you cant hardly hear it?
If you you got a case of warn out bearings bud. That was my problem, but i do not suggest taking a look cause if they are bad as soon as you pop off the hub the bearings will fall out. But i can say try this test :
Lift the problem wheel and try pulling it back and forth there should not be any play between the wheel and the hub.
