behind the obc

Does anyone know what the plastic wall behind the obc and sunglass holder is? is it vital to the car? i want to put part of a in dash dvd player in there but with that plastic wall it is not deep enough. i dont want to remove or cut through it if it is part of the heater duct or some shit like that i can get a good ass deal on this player and the portion that holds the cds needs to go down there and the screen portion goes where my current headunit sits. thanks in advance as always
