you generally have to remove the steering wheel to make it easier, but i know some do it without doing so.

this is for an E36:

Make sure you don't hook up the battery and turn on the key with the airbag still disconneted if you do take the steering wheel off. It will throw the SRS light and it really sucks. I still haven't got my light reset and I replaced my dash bulbs 6 months ago. You need a special tool that cost at least $80 to reset the light, or you have to take it to the stealership.

its a very st8 forward procedure, just remove a few screws (i think 4, cant remember) and u can slide it out, yes it is doable to slide it out w/the steering wheel in place, however some people prefer removing the steering wheel for some reason, also, at the same time you can get gauge cluster rings that give it a very nice sporty look for dirt cheap

Yes, it's very doable with the steering wheel on, you just gotta take your time with it. But it beats putting the wheel back on again.

This IS a task. I tried doing it quite a while ago, and it was a total pain in the ass, I broke the plastic rings that the screws go in, no biggie but "I broke something" doing this job so that sucked. I wound up replacing the wrong bulb. Not in illumination one but like one of the other indicator bulbs like a turn signal... and it wasn't burnt.
It sucks, it can be done without removing the steering wheel (I'm not so sure about getting it out without scratching up the leather but I guess if you really wanted to)
I loathe doing this again, another bulb went out and now I have to really look at night to see how much gas I have left or what my water temp is.

I might be able to help you with the SRS light. Lemme know when you're available, and I'll see what I can do.
