Question Replacing rear window (convertible)

I am curious if anyone has any experience replacing the rear window in an E36 convertible (mine is a 98 M3 with a zippered window). Most info I have seen indicates that it should be done professionally. I would like to save the $$$ if possible.

If you are replacing it because it is cloudy, what you need to do is clean it real good inside and out. Don't use anything abrasive, but you do need to rub alot. I also rain-x the outside when I am done. If you are replacing it because it is damaged, I mean ripped, because if it is just scratched the scratches will fade with repeated cleaning. I've been told that replacing is a pita. And the savings may not be worth it if it leaks and ruins the interior.

Personally the rear window is the most cleaned part of my car. I even keep a squeedge in the trunk to clean it. I also use the squeedge to get ice and snow off the rear window as well.

Thanks. I too have kept it very clear using plastic polish. The problem is that the edges where it folds have small cracks and the piping is starting to come undone in this area. It's more cosmetic at this point but eventually it will get worse.

The best idea is to find an automotive upholstory shop and have them cut it out. They can then sew in a new rear window.

I don't think the zippered windows have to be cut out, but I'm sure there is more to it than just unzipping and zipping.

Easy replacement

here's a link, this guy makes the windows by hand and they are better than original and cheaper. He also makes a tinted one (which I bought) He gives complete instructions and all the goods you need to do it -- About, 130.00 to 150.00 $http://www.emiata.com/E36Window.asp
