E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
I first tried to change the starter myself. It is a pain and I did not want to take off anything else to have to get to it. I gave up becuase I could not find/get to the final bolt/nut to get it off. So I rolled it down a hill, popped the clutch which started it and I was so excited. Drove it to the shop got the bill and was not excited. The moral of the story is....well I guess there isn't one.

In another forum, someone paid $750 for starter replacement. That was parts and labor. I heard you had to take the intake manifold off to replace. Is that true?

taking the intake manifold off to dot he starter would make it much easier, but takin the intake manifold off is a PAIN, however, the starter can be done w/out taking the intake manifold off

It is good to be driving again. Now if I could jut get more HP in the low end(common problem)
The starter was $180 with labor at about $80hour. 4hours=$500
$750 seems outrageous! No way was I touching the intake...

I think $500 dollars is outrageous. But I'm a cheap bas***d. And I wouldn't touch the manifold either, if at all possible.
