E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
kinda dirty clean her up *hint* send it to the machine shop
You mean, the outside looks dirty, because the inside looks brand new, other than the coat of oil on everything. Right now, I care more for the inside then the outside.

Nice shots Rob and looks really clean from shots of internals. After machine shop has it, it'll come back almost steril. Keep up the pics w/progress. (killer project)
Looks good rob.. I am still amazed at how clean that engine is.
To let everyone know the freeze plug on the back of the oil filter housing was messed up which cause a constant oil leak.. Thus all of the oil. But we did no cleaning of the internals, or of the intake or exhaust ports. For 260,000+ miles it looks really good.
Well, things took a turn for the worst today. I finally got the head off, and just as expected, the carbon build up of a 100,000+ mile engine was there. A problem though. Karl, remember how you said that cylinder 3 had lower compression? Well, I found out why. There is literally a gouge in the side of the cylinder wall. It feels like it could be deeper than 2mm, which means I may have to toss it. Looks like I will be boring it after all, or may end up with a different block. Looks like the cylinder 2 and 3 pistons are toast as well, so new pistons anyway. I was planning for new ones, so that didn't hurt as much.

crap.. That sucks.. If you bore it out you should be fine.. But still sucks.. Wow.. cylinder 4 still has the hash marks.. crazy.
It almost looks like something fell in there and caused the damage. since it is conentrated in one area.

So that's where that missing half of the spark plug ended up!?!? J/K
I bought a 79' Chevy 1/2 ton Shortwide with a 454 in it and it had so much power I couldn't tell that one of the cylinders had a detinated piston. At least I was able to drop it out without taking the motor out and I replaced it, but I feel for you. A scoured cylinder wall sucks to find. It seems that any engine work always has setbacks!
