actually I don't think you could go to 20" I think the e36 can only safely do 19, it will screw up your ride, but you can do it. personally I like my 16's I might go 17 in the future but I think that may be it.

on a side note, now you see why changing the overall dimensions of the tire is bad? not only do you mess up the speedometer and odometer, you could rub the wheel well the wrong way

The best size in my view would be a 17x7.5 rim. You can fit 245/40/17 tires. Lots of tire and you shouldn't even need spacers.

17 is best for performance and 18 is considered better for looks.

tires are cheaper for 17's and you dont risk bending the wheels as much as you do with 18's.
