E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
I'm looking into buying some front clear turn signals for my 328is. I'm a little curious, do I need to buy yellow bulbs? I'm not sure if CA law dictates that turn signals must be yellow or whatever so answers are appreciated!
Also, let's say I did need to get yellow bulbs, where do I get some? Does anyone else have any?

You'll get the "egg yolk" effect where you can see the yellow bulb. You can either a) paint over them in silver or b) order clear bulbs that blink yellow.

They are actually called "amber". They have to be amber where I live. Each state might be different, check with the DMV to be sure. If you want the chrome "stealth" bulbs, try www.autolumination.com, they have them for about $4.00 each. Or if you have a spray can of silver, chrome, or aluminum paint laying around, give the ambers a spray.

Delaware may not care, some states do, some don't. Or they may not have noticed yet. In any case, don't mess with the stupid people. They expect to see orange, or yellow turn signals, otherwise you will confuse people and they will hit you because they are stupid.
I have had my clear bulbs in my clear corners for just over two years in OR and I havn't had a cop follow me ever. But the stealthing of Amber bulbs looks like a pretty cheap fix!
If I'm not mistaken the bulb color is a federal law not so much a state law. If the PO-LEECE want to get picky they could hassle you. Especially if you live in a state that has "state inspections" (Texas, etc...) The lense isn't an issue it's the color when activated. I think they've gotten a little more "lax" on it because of all the newer car lenses, and hopefully they have more important issues than to hassle people for bulbs. Keep in mind - if you are of the "party-ing sort" or a "late nighter" you're just giving them a reason to stop you.
I have a friend who is a cop here in Atlanta. I was helping him with a computer problem when he looked out the window at my car.. 2 seconds later he said "your turn signals are illegal, You WILL get pulled over for that in Fulton county." But mine blink orange and he said they are fine.
They might not mess with you for a while, but its just a matter how the cops are feeling at the time.
