I see on your mod list you went to a z8 style push button ignition. got any pics of that?

also, anybody install a remote starter for their e36? Was it difficult?

Here's a pic of the button: Link. It's the small round one. The up/down switch is for the leds in the floorboard (which I'm probably going to be taking out soon.) The missing plate on the right side was replaced since the pic was taken. haha

Cameron (El Pres) helped me get this setup. Basically you put the key in and turn the car to the ON position (not start). That validates the microchip and everything. Then you can just push the button and it actually starts the car. You have to hold it down for a second the exact same as you turning the key forward to the start position. It's just a wired in connection that when you push the button, it's the exact same as the key touching the connection in the ignition.

Not practical at all, but fun for showing off sometimes. :) Just a toy.


Edit: And ever since I got it, I've been meaning to stop by a sign shop and get them to engrave a white "Start" label on the button. I'll do it one day. haha

i see you have an auto too. I wish my 3 were manual. I love being able to control the revs myself. I hate driving in bumper to bumper traffic though.

Yeah... I'm mixed about the tranny.

Auto is nice for traffic or when you're on the cell phone. Trying to steer, shift, and balance the phone on your shoulder isn't fun. It's a lot easier to hold the phone with one hand and the wheel with the other. Buuut.... for agressive driving manual is more fun. I use steptronic often, but it's not the same (shifting is SLOW). I actually think I get more benifits from the auto than not... even though my next car is definately going to be a standard.

I heard that city driving with a 5 speed would be annoying. Well, I don't mind it at all :)

well, the PA turnpike every day isn't any picnic. I would hate to drive a standard on that trip every day.

You can, it's just expensive. Around $3k installed.

It's usually cheaper to sell and buy a new car that's a factory manual.

driving and talking on a cell isnt hard with a manual... either shift low before the corner... or keep the revs high till you straighten out and then shift....

I guess, but 3k isn't bad considering you might get to find out a lot of details about the history of the car while you have it pulled apart, and make adjustments.

I was thinking for down the road, when she dies and I have to replace the whole engine. I like this car so much, I plan on keeping it for a LONG long time (and I used to go through cars like some men go through women ;) )

5 speed swap is very doable in your car dude, talk to jrhaile on the forums he has one... Best would be to do it while putting in a new engine, but which ever!

Like the switch but yeah it does need a nice red button that says "engine start" haha. I love manual, no problems drinking coffee or w.e changing the radio etc while driving. I like to be involved with driving no matter what, so i rarely do anything but drive(never really drink, eat in car). I swap shouldnt be 3 g's. I know a good shop that could throw a slightly used manual in there for less then that.
