Finding a tranny
So everyone talks about swapping to manual tranny, but does anyone have a good place to get one? It's kinda pot luck searching through salvage yards, unless someone knows a reliable place. And I keep getting prices of around $1000 for a Getrag 250 . . is that reasonable?

Bah. You should be able to get a ZF for around 700. 1000 for a lower model tranny doesn't seem right, unless it is brand new. Your best bet is to find a auto to manual swap kit for sale for around 1500 or so.

I don't need the swap kit, mine is already a manual. Just needs replacement 'coz the synchros are going. Mine is a getrag 250, you mean a ZF will bolt right on in its place?

^^^Yea, that's one of my choices to follow up on. I wish I could find one locally tho, save on the freight charges.

Alright. I would go with the Getrag again, unless you want to upgrade your flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate.

Looks like we are in the same boat dudesky, i am looking for one myself.
I have heard from many people that the getrag 260 out of the e30's bolts up without modification and is much stronger than the stock transmission. It seems like a good alternative for those who dont want to spend 500-1000 on a ZF. it seems like the 250 is a weak link.. tons of people having syncros problems with them. |
^^^Yea, the Red Line helped a little but the problem is still there, especialy when the tranny is cold. Once it's hot, it pretty much works as normal tho, so I figure I got a few months left on it at least. I'll check out the 260's too, and let me know how if you find anyplace interesting & reliable.
