E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
First off, you can use M1 extended performance for 15,000 miles. The catch is that you MUST change out your filter every 5,000, or you will overflow the filter and cause the dirt and impurities to enter back into the system. That is the main reason why it looks like it could not hold it's own for 15,000 miles. It will be the same with Amsoil.
Also, you can have synthetic oil sit for 7 years and have it be fine. It will not change one bit. You can not base synthetic oils off of years, but ONLY off of milage. For all what you know, that car could have just sat in the shop for 7 years. Also, im not 100% sure on this, but wern't synthetic (atleast full synthetic) oils a recent discovery like 5 years ago? One more thing, I'm not up for sending in a collection tank to Amsoil everytime I need my oil checked. Shipping alone for those type of contaminates "legally" must be up in the 30s to 40s anyway. It would be best to just go ahead and get fresh oil into the system.
Well.. we will see, it say's on the back of the bottle i am holding in my hand that the oil is good for 25k miles.. i will change my filter accordingly and report back in about a year or so.. lol.
Syns have been around "publicly" since the '60s (military used it before then. Amzoil has been around since mid '70s. Mostly fleet cars used "syns" to save maintenance costs.
I agree on the mileage taking it's toll on the oil. Plus if his car was a "show-piece" it probably didn't see alot of stop & go and climate changes.
I'ld still like to hear an actual user not a salesman.
I seem to recall a small bearing issue regarding the s54 myself, and i have to say that the BMW recommended 10w30 that is used every 15k oil change probably does not suffice and most likely had something to do with the problem. That is speculation on my behalf though.
The S54 uses 10W-60, not 10W-30. I have yet to see any bearing issues in the service bulletins with the S54 either.

rob, just a comment on that shipping thing, my friend who owns a shop, its basically free. Some company drops the container off at his shop,a nd when its full, they come and take it and give him another... but thats only for shops, not home users

I am not sure about the oil.. i thought i was correct, maybe not.. but even though the bearing failure problem my not be stated in an official bmw bulletin, i think we all know something is up when there are so many similar failures.
I guess the point i am stressing is that maybe BMW does not know best in this case, they recommend 15k mile oil changes and that is without filter changes, which we both agree are necessary for the oil to last that long and do so in a clean manner.
Just so you know the collection tank/analysis deal is meant for trash trucks, rigs, boats, etc, that see huge mileage and take large amounts of oil, it is meant for 'fleets' as clapton said, and is not really practical or needed for people like you and me..
Synthetics have also been around for a lot longer than 5 years :P
My car pulls stronger. It really does.. i did a little butt dyno from 2500 rpm's in 5th to 125 MPH, and it IS faster.
Pulls noticably harder all the way to redline in all gears.
It rev's more freely too and simply runs better.
Are you comparing how well the car ran with mobil 1 did before the change to the newly changed amosil? Menaing you tested a car who need an oil change to one that just got an oil change.

Ok, so to sum everything up, we want proof that this stuff is as good as advertised, so keep running it and let us know how it's going in 15k miles. In the mean time I'll keep using castrol syntec and we'll wait for your results.
How do you think this stuff compares to something like Red Line?
I think they're all comparable. I think Red Line & Lucas are the newer guys to the market. Amzoil has been around for awhile, it's just their marketing is usually through private dealers (or was in the past) If you ever question an oils' validity make sure it has the API/CC ratings on the bottle. Those are guidelines set by the American Petrolium Institute and they validate an oil for automotive & diesel use.

Yes i am.. but its my opinion that if M1 15k mile oil can actually go 15k miles it shouldnt be giving me bad gas mileage and just all around shitty performance 3k miles down the road.
