I'm sure there actually is a chip. It is probably soldered in, making changing it a problem. If Dinan offers a chip, I'll bet you have to go to an authorized dealer to have it installed.

my car is 1994 325i sedan the ecu is 261 200 413
one more thing i realized was that not only the chip removed the check engine light i had before but also when i put the stock chip back the check engine gave a code 1222 which is lamda control 1 which i think is oxygen sensor before that the code was 1444(no fault)
now i dont know if my oxygen sensor is weak or the chip is crap
the car does not idle roughly i dont really feel a loss of power with the stock chip

^^ Yep. I know for a fact I have EWS on my 328, and I'm pretty sure I do on the M3 also... but both my keys are silver.
And actually, my friend Zak owns a 1993 325i that shouldn't have it, and his key is silver also, but has a flat, squareish top, while my keys are rounded and thicker (almost bubbled out at the top). Zak's other car is a 2004 E46 325i (with EWS of course) and his key is... you guessed it... silver.

Are you sure?
I had a deep discussion with a technician that owns a 95 M3.
I was driving an e39 530i at that point and time, and we compared keys.
He showed me his and I looked at the e39s....and the e39 was indeed gold...and his was not. He said, an indicator of EWS.
