E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
All told for $890 I had the clutch replaced, both belts replaced, brake switch replaced (the convertible is a little more expensive) and the radiator replaced. And a little bit of underbody stuff fixed. That includes all parts and labor. Unfortunately the guy I used is in eastern PA. by allentown/bethlehem. And unless you are there you have to shop around for a mechanic.
If the clutch is slipping usually 3rd and 4th full throttle after clutch has been released will tell you. That's when mine started slippin, those are your stompin gears and it sucks when she decides to give you higher revs than speed.
People on bimmerforums say they can replace the clutch on their m3 in about 30-45 mins, is that anywhere near possible?
Yea it's possible. Folks who do it alot can "bang" them out quick. Also with the right tools -(clutch alignment tool, hoist, air tools etc..) It's too bad you weren't closer to Minn. - I'll be home for a week next week and have a 3 stall shop, hoists, tools - going to do engine swap on "bird" and M5 front springs/struts on the E34.

Thanks Harry, my guys are here reading over my shoulder (I'm arranging all their air fare home currently) and now they want to make a full blown video production of spring DIY. Sure we'll do it WTF.
Lets see:
2 M5 springs - $223.00
2 Bilstein Sport shocks - $220.00
Beer for audio & video crew - $600.00

i did those tests, here are results
after i shift from 3rd to 4th and i go full throttle, my revs go higher than my speed
when i start my car in 5th, it dies right away
when i shift from 2nd to 5th at 20 mph, my rpm's just drop a lot
so...i guess this means its slipping...but not too much?

Well, the first test you did right. That tells you the clutch is slipping.
The second test is to try and start it in 3rd, not 5th.
The third test is to shift from 2nd to 5th at 20mph and give it full throttle. You should experience something similiar to 3rd to 4th and go full throttle.
