I don't think it matters if you go thru the gears or not.
Yeah, but obviously it depends on where on your tach you shift at. If I shift normally at 2500 rpms I'd need to take it up to 3500 rpms to go into fourth.

I know, I just dont want to skip a gear and haev it drop into a rev that's so low it would struggle to pull at all and may cause excess stress on the engine/valvetrain.

didnt read everyones posts.. a good test is to get up to 20mph, then throw it into 4th gear..
if the rpms rise up much faster than the speed, the clutch is going

That's what mine was doing and it was the clutch and yes you can skip gears on the way up but not on the way down unless you drop speed significantly, WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT GO STRAIGHT FROM 5TH to 2ND. You will overrun the engine and you could suffer some bent valves which is bad.
Get the clutch replaced. I had mine done by an independant BMW mechanic. it was ~450 give or take, I had him do a bunch of stuff but that represents about what it cost. The clutch feels great I get better mileage and I have more power. I wouldn't go with the M3 clutch simply because It shouldn't make much difference, unless you go nuts with a new flywheel, short shift, new bushings, and a performace clutch, etc... The stock clutch should be fine.

if you replace the clutch i would recommend doing a lightweight flywheel. i felt the biggest increase in acceleration from this mod. if you have any questions about the install let me know cause i've done it before. pelican parts has a very good write up on it too.
what upgrades are you considering doing, you might look into doing a stage 1 or 2 upgrade on the clutch if its going to be a whole lot of change. i have the stage 3 spec clutch in and it is great
did you replace your clutch by yourself? I've never done a clutch install before so do you think I"ll be good if i follow the pelican parts writeup? I'm thinking about getting the uuc lwfw and m5 clutch together when i do this.
