E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
My hood has many rockchips, and the clear coat is peeling off in some areas. On top of that, the previous owner used a bra, and you can tell by how the surface wore differently under the bra.
Anyways, how much should it cost to get this taken care of?
Would it be possible for me to touch up the rock chips nad then just have a shop clear coat the whole thing? I am not all that concerned with smoothness as I am with how apparent the rock chips are.
I'd say the whole front clip, so there's no difference in colour between the hood and fenders, they'll charge you for a gallon or pint of paint anyways. Rock chips suck and bra's on cars!!!!

That's not too bad. What about hood, nose panel, and an m3 bumper ?
when I wanted to get what you mentioned, plus repainting my mirrors, I was quoted almost the same price as a whole paintjob, maybe there are better bodyshops near you drz.
I don't know of any good shops around here. A friend of mine (well, he was dating a friend of mine) used to work in a shop not very far from here, and he claimed they were pretty good.
I will hold on to my e36 if the cost of getting it in good shape is not too high. Otherwise, I will probably just buy something newer -- still BMW.
Clear coat only jobs??? Sure, some do. However, for the work of taping the car off and all it would probably just be worth your while to do paint as well. I think your best bet is to go to a bunch of shops and ask for quotes. Also see what cars are there at the time and go back a week later. Make sure the cars aren't still there. You don't want them to have your car for weeks when the job should only take a few days at most.

If it's a lower splitter, check out what Rooz did for his lower splitter. I believe he painted it himself... maybe a writeup was involved (I don't remember). Spraypaint it yourself...

Great advice. Make sure you see if each shop will blend both of your fenders and bumper too. Just remeber you get what you pay for, especially when it comes to body shops. If you find a deal that is too good to be true, it probably is.
