E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
Help, I have serious electrical problems... please.
Okay, I relize that I haven't been on in a while, sorry, I blame Calc 2 and Physics 23. Anyway, I have a serious problem.
There is something in my car that is draining my battery. I have checked the battery, it is perfect. I have it narrowed down to 3 amp-draining fuses.
#31
#33
#9
These three fuses (and the things connected to them) control a multitude of things. #9 is merely my radio, it is a small ampere draw. #31 and #33 (the larger draws) control heated door locks, on-board computer, clock, outside ambient temperature, interior lights, instrument panel, all climate control and many others.
I cannot narrow it down more than that because the draw is intermintent, meaning that it happens at random. I need insight.
Is anyone else having or had a problem with any of these things shorting out or going to ground or have had a little genie fuck with their car?
Right now, I have it set up so that if I want heat or the radio, I have to put in #9, 31, and 33. When I get out, I have to take them out or it drains me battery and I need a jump.
Any input would be amazing.
Thanks guys,
Amanda

Inspect all wires behind your radio and OBC. I'm taking a wild guess because you say it's intermittent, maybe you have exposed wiring that is shorting out back there?
i have checked out the OBC, all the wires are fine, but I have an aftermarket radio installed. i will check that next. however, the radio is only a small ampere draw, which should just be the memory function on the radio itself. right? is there something else that may be messin with my electrical system?

I'ld double check the wiring from OBC, because if all was fine you wouldn't have to pull associated fuses. I suspect there's there's a wire or two that's "chaffed" and making contact near a moving part - like heater controls, etc. That would explain intermittent problem. Try to make note(s) on what position dash controls are in when it does/doesn't happen. (Know it sounds like a pain but??) Even moisture in the electrical plugs could cause minor carbon tracking causing current draw.
Just another thought here . . on cars with analog climate control, there's a fan behind the unit that stays on for about 2min after the car is shut off. If you listen closely, you'll hear it. Maybe for some reason yours is not shutting off?
