cams
Hiya Guys,
I have been looking into doing some cam work on my 1992 325i M50 engine. I was asking about buying a set of used M3 cams, but was told that they would not work in my engine. I have a set of tuned headers , a SS exhaust system, performance coils and a racing Chip install already. I was also told
"Ok, you have a 92' non Vanos M50. Only vanos 93-95 can accept M3 S50 cams and need a new chip, something I'm actually doing soon, I already have the cams and chip. (((For a 92', You move your intake cam to the exhaust side and buy a shrick intake cam, also I've heard a S50 intake cam will work. What I'm not sure of is that the ends of the cams, where the timing chains and sprockets run, the intake cam has four holes for bolts, and the exhaust has three. If your intake only has three, then I guess you wouldn't be able to use the S50 intake cam, but I'm not sure.)))"
Could anyone back up this info or suggest something else. I am also looking for a used Garrett turbo system if you know of one let me know OK.
You folks that know BMWs please tell me something about the cams.
Thank you for your time

The best way to do it is by using a 256 degree Schrick intake cam and moving the current m50 non-vanos intake cam to the exhaust side. I'm sure you can get custom software from either AA or Turner. Don't mess w/ s50 cams they won't work in the non-vanos heads.
By the way swapping the Schrick and m50 intake cams in the non-vanos head will result the same lift and duration as the m3. Thus it is the same as doing the s50 cam swap.
I don't know if turbo is best for our engines, however you can make one bad ass n/a 2.9l stroker. All you need are 1. s50 crank 2. s50 rods 3. s50 pistons and 4. slight bore of the block. Supposed to produce between 230 and 250 at the wheels depending on what bolt ons you have.
Hope this helps,
-Matt

How much power would you produce with swaping the non-vanos intake cam to the exhaust side and buying a schrick intake cam? If you also have other mods like k&N intake, headers, chip, power pulleys? Also have you heard anything about changing the head gasket to 11-1 compression? any ideas how much gains you would expect? Thanks Michael
