E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
///95M3, are you trying to say that I should sell my non-performance 540 just to have an LSD? The reason mine does not have an LSD, whilst being a performance car, is that BMW had not yet managed to develop a traction control system that did not blow up LSD's. As it has as much ability as an M5, it will and does keep little cars like the M3 honest at all but the tightest race tracks. Unlike an E34 M5, you can lend my car to anyone to drive and not worry about them wrapping it around a pole (unless they flick TC off).
LSD cars are more difficult to drive at the limits, but they are more fun. However, for my daily driver, the 540iS (1 of 70 built, so a lot rarer than any version E36 M3) is a great car.

hah not quite...let me start off by saying your car is gorgious and I'm not hating on people who buy a big open-diff BMW's(which dont offer LSD's) who dont track their cars...who dont need an LSD at all.
My point is why buy a car w/o an LSD(e30,E36,E34(some),E46) when the same E with one is available...then compain about it. I mean these newbs are buying BMW's, ricing them out and complaining about 1 wheel drive, auto trans. etc. They need to do their research, get on a race track, decide what they wan't, and stop doing 1 wheel burn outs at our Bimmer meets hah.
As far as tracking LSD cars...I think they are MUCH easier to control at any limit. I have been doing instructing classes at a controlled oversteer/drifing school for some time now and I have pushed/drifted/slid all sorts of cars way past the limit(many open diff and lsd cars) for long periods of time....and by no means is an open diff car easier to control at the limits..from a sliding standpoint or a roadracing/autox standpoint... As far as Autox, road courses, etc. you will never push your car to its max spinning a single rear wheel up on tight turns, hair pins etc.. I understand that your 540is can most definitly run around with M3's on a track anyday(I see it all the time), but you will loose performance with that diff...mostly depending on the track.
Anyhow...1 of 70 is pretty amazing. Is it just usual BMW S upgrades for the s on the 540.

There isn't a large abundance of 5-speed E36's under 100k, let alone one with an LSD. Also, you forgot to mention that a lot of owners don't have a fucking clue as to if their car has one or what an LSD even is, so when a buyer asks how are they to answer? A lot of people also buy an E36 as their first car, with not much mechanical knowledge so they are not sure what exactly to look for. So if someone buys an E36 and realizes how big of a difference LSD is, they are now an idiot for not buying one? I'm afraid you're the idiot. So do everyone in this thread a favor and stfu.

that's a honda tech for you. hey i was wondering, do FWD cars have LSDs? i kid i kid.
unfourtunately, not many non m's came with a LSD from the factory. when i bought my 325 i was happy to upgrade from a 318. even now, i don't feel that i would deserve an m3. i'm not able to outdrive my 325, yet. i see now problem with sticking a LSD on though.
