engine code location?

I,m new to BMW's. Where do I find the engine code to know whether I have an E50, E52 etc? Can,t seem to find it anywhere and my door jamb plate was replaced with a goverment replacement due to it being stolen when new from the lot then recovered with no damage.

Theirs no real plate, except on the engine block itself. Their are however several differences between the two engines. If you have a 1998 E36 i can tell you right now that you have an M52 engine.

The M50 was made from 1991-1995. In 1996 they switched to the M52 engine.
