E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
Ok so now ive got a Sound coming from the passenger rear wheel i checked everything i could ( tire rubbing, lugnuts are tight, brakes OK !)
so i went on google and found this:Listen for a "clicking" sound from the rear of the car when you change directions from reverse to forward - stop and just let the clutch out a little then reverse them (radio off, window open) which can indicate bad CV joints.
Could this be true?? oh yea it clicks about 8-15Mph anything higher i cant hear.
This is different just when i start rolling into the 8-15mph the faster i get to 15mph it clicks faster like i got a freakin playing card flapping against my rim , lol .. jehe
"-Differential clutch pack retaining ring bolts can loosen or back out, eventually resulting in rear end failure. If you hear a ticking noise in the rear, have the final drive checked out."
Where these said bolts are located I have no clue. But I doubt this is what you have anyway. I'd have someone check the diff & CV joints, before more damage might occur tho.
4e DRIVING NOISES AND VIBRATIONS 1a.Check the noise to see if it varies with road speed. Verify if the nouse is not present when coasting or with steering or throttle input . If the clicking noise frequency changes with road speed amd is not affected by steering or throttle input, check the treads for stone, peice of glass, nail or other hard object imbedded into the tiore or tire tread. ( allready checked all tires)
1b.If the clicking noise varies with throttle input and steering, check for worn Constant Velocity (CV Joint) joint, universal (U-joint) or flex joint.
what u guys think..?
Chilton also reccomends that CV Boots should be checked each time the oil is changed. the cost on a CV Joint, is on average on 5 to 10 times more expensive than just a boot.
1b. Don't think it would be any diff. about the noise rear or front wheel drive, but i Know from the past fwd cv's click like a son of a bitch in cornering. Same pressure diff. ends. But that's my opinion. Good Luck

The clicking will probably make the same sound whether your in a RWD or FWD, same pressure on both ends while cornering. Also clicking can be heard off acceleration. The 1b. was from your thread earlier
