Universal remote central lock kit
Hi everyone...I've got a '94 316i coupe with key driven central locking factory fitted. I've bought an aftermarket remote kit which should be easy to fit, there are very few wires but I'm struggling with two of them - the ones from the unit designated 'open signal' and 'close signal'. Any help as to exactly what and where in the car they should be attached would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
I'm nt sure why you wanted the aftermarket one. I haven't heard anything good about aftermarket installs in E36's. Are these two wires coming from the aftermarket unit?

Would much rather not go down this route but got this car as a replacement for my old trusty 316i when it's head finally went. It was only supposed to be a temporary replacement until I got a newer BMW but it's actually a fantastic car and I'd like to keep it a while yet now. It only came with one key - with no remote on it. My local BMW dealership want £160 for a Master Key and for all I know it may not even work, the car is very old and who know's what's been done to it? £20 for a universal unit seemed the cheapest option but unless I can sort out where these two wires (yes, from the unit) go then I'll have to just settle for the manual central locking I guess.
The BMW keys have to be purchased from the dealership. They have whats called the EWS system, commonly known as the "Drive away protection system". The key has a chip in it which sends a unique code to reciever in the ignition. The codes don't match, the car doesnt start. Thats why their so expensive. I paid around $100 for mine without the light in it. The key will work unless someone has disabled the EWS system which is highly unlikley. A remote cant be purchased anymore, but their are many on ebay.
Now, are you saying when you hit the central locking button none of the locks work? That may be a fault with the central locking system itsef. The ZKE module that controls it is located behind the glovebox. I have never heard of an aftermarket central locking module replacing the OEM one. Thats probably why you have the issue with the wires.

Most door locks will trigger with a signal from the alarm open / close. BMW does not. I have seen an design with a few relays to apply the proper signal.
