bimmer blues...code 1286
I have a 95 318Ti with 117,000 miles and the check engine light came on, I went through the flashing check light message and came up with a code of 1286, but I do not know from all the code list what this means? I am guessing o2 senser.
Can anyone help?
Knock sensors are usually located near cylinder head. They monitor engine knock/ping (cheap gas, pre ignition,etc...) and when they detect a knock/ping they retard your ignition to prevent damage. You're going to need a schematic for your engine to locate them (there's 2 if I'm not mistaken). First make sure they're clean and tight. If that is ok you'll probably have to replace them. From what I've heard it's not common for them to go bad - so it's a pretty good bet they're corroded or loose.
