Unhappy My Car Just Died.

Yeah, tonight, on my 1am run to Krystal, it died.

I was sitting in the drive-through line at the window, waiting for my sackful of 24 chese krystals, and all of a sudden I heard a soft POP, and my engine shut off instantly. I was like "ummmm", and tried restarting it. I put the key in and turn it, and most accessories turn on (all indicator lights, a/c on full blast, headlights, but not my headunit).... I turn the key to the start position, and it goes click-click-click-click, sounding like it's not even trying to turn over.

And my mechanic is 2 hours away. So tonight my car is going to sleep in the Krystal parking lot, and I'll call a tow company tomorrow morning to take it to the local dealership.

It seems like it's probably just a fried starter.

are you sure jrhaile? it clicked, so that means the starter didnt turn, yea either ur battery is dead or, like jrhiale said, your alternator, but i dont know if your battery would die that quickly..

I called Karl (my mechanic) and he said from my description there's no way its the alternator. 90% chance it's the starter.

Takes a lot of battery power to start a car, however it doesn't seem like this is the case. My guess is also the alternator.

Convo with me and Deloriant:

Quote:
M4yorThis: hope all is well with the car. i'm sure its just the alternator.
M4yorThis: i'm sure you were playing porn in the drivethru while your car was off or something
CalliditasCastor: why do you think it's the alternator and not the starter?
M4yorThis: cuz it died
M4yorThis: cars don't randomly die
CalliditasCastor: my mechanic said the chance of it being the alternator is almost nothing
M4yorThis: then why'd the car die?
CalliditasCastor: he said it's probably the starter =/
CalliditasCastor: i dunno
CalliditasCastor: good question...
M4yorThis: the starter starts the car
CalliditasCastor: very good point.
M4yorThis: it doesnt keep it going
M4yorThis: the alternator keeps it going
CalliditasCastor: fuck, very true
M4yorThis: then again, a mecahnic would know a hell of a lot more than me or you or jrhaile
M4yorThis: so let me know when you find out
CalliditasCastor: will do

And on that note, what are my options for an alternator upgrade? Anyone know anything about it?

a starter dying will not cause your car to suddenly stop running fyi. It's probably something along the lines of a popped alt. which then could have friend your seloniod and or starter...same scenario happened to me last winter.
