E36 Misfire at #2, Stalls at Idle '95
Hi guys, I'm getting ready to buy this sweet beamR but it's got a few issues. I am willing to invest in repairs and have some basic understanding of E36/E46. I just need some info to help me at least be able to drive off the seller's parking lot. 1995 BWM 325i Smell of gasoline coming somewhere from the engine bay. Rough Start/Idle Stall - must continually push gas pedal to keep it from stalling. Stalls immediately when releasing the gas pedal. MISFIRE AT # 2. While pushing the gas pedal, the car will continue running, and will most likely be drivable long distances, at least letting me drive off the lot. However, there is this very loud "Clap!!! Clap!!! Clap!!!" popping sound coming from #2. The owner says this car was his daily driver to work. He says it could either be 1) Spark Plug 2) Coil 3) Fuel Pump etc... My question is, to be able to drive off the lot, can I disconnect #2 completely, and will it let me drive on 5 cylinders? Thanks guys, all help greatly appreciated! |

Welcome to United Bimmer. The stalling issues could be a result of a dirty or clogged Idle Control Valve (ICV). I wouldn't recommend disconnecting the plug because the computer won't know what's going on and will have issues compensating and may go into limp mode. Has the car ever been overheated? That sound is indicative of a bigger problem with may require an engine tear down.

Hi thanks for quick response. The ownR says no, it hasn't overheated before, but I can't confirm it. I can either tow the car to my mechanic, or try disconnecting the # 2. But you say it's not recommended...  On youtube, in the DIY vidz I noticed how they show you how to check for coil issues, and they take out the coil in real time, with the engine running... and it seems to be ok... |

I would definitely get an independent inspection done. Buying a car with more problems then you thought isn't very fun. If you wanna try unplugging the coil that's up to you. If it other people have done it successfully I don't see why not.
