What are the advantages of Coilovers? - United Bimmer Community

Im planning to replace my suspnsion next spring but i dont know much about suspension sadly. One of my friends told me to get coil-overs. Ive been looking at the Bilstien PSS coilovers and they seem like a good way to go so far. But im wondering what are the advantages of coilovers? Is it worth spending a couple hunded extra bucks rather then just getting performance springs and shocks? rember i dont know to much about suspension

1- the ability to fine tune suspension characteristics

2- instead of hit or miss mixing & matching springs to shocks, you get a perfect match of spring and damper.

If i were to coil overs would it be advantageous to get adjustable rear control arms? i read that with coilovers u get unwanted negative camber and the control arms correct it.

here is how it works, you do the drop, get an allignment check, if you have negative camber, you THEN get the rear adjustable control arms

this is right. but you also need to wait about 1-2 weeks before that alignment for the springs and shocks to fully settle.

if you have the dough, you can't beat the bilstein coil-over set up.

But also, when I look around at several coilovers the Minimum" drop was pretty high ~1.7....

My dads friend with an evo, got coilovers not too long ago, and that thing is crazy low. He tracks his car so I think you should get some h &r springs with koni shocks or something.

^^ me and a buddy go autoXing once a month or so. But what sucks about were we go is one of the turns has really crappy asphalt, and last time i went i had bad wheel hop and that kinda shit. like the wheels would shake and stuff when i went over it. as for the lowering i dont care much but im getting an M3 bumper so i do wanna be able to enter parking lots and stuff

Koni adjustables are just as good and are about 1/5th the price.

^^^I agree. Combine them w/ H&R springs.

Pluse the money saved can be put towards sway or strut bars.
