An automatic bimmer is just... wrong. That's not the way they should be. The car is much different in an automatic version. For cgoodness sakes, they use a GM auto slushbox.

That is just your opinion. There are about 8 billion people and they have their opinions. some agree, some don't, and many don't care. I have my opinion also and I have decided to drive an automatic. It is not even nearly wrong as far as I'm concerned. I guess we disagree on something. I'll just drive my car and have fun and not look down on any one for their choices. And I hope you have a good life also.

Last I checked this was a e36 THREE series forum. The e36 THREE series uses a GM SLUSHBOX.
You know your picture applys to yourself, too, right?
ok "Einstein", I'll inform all the E36 owners that their ZF transmissions are "GM slushboxes" according to you. Obviously you win. C-ya on the short bus
Debate about manufacturers if you want, but this subforum is about information. If you disagree with someone else's opinion, at least be respectful of them.
I live in the city, having a stick is a pain in the city. But my city is full of hills and mountains so it kinda makes up for it. Whenever I have open road it is perfect, or I'm coming down the mountain with all the twists and turns, it just can't be beat. It's a level of control and feeling that just can't be felt in an automatic. I'm not taking away from the benefits of an auto, but if you are into that level of control you know what I mean. In fact one of the things I love about my bimmer is that it does require me to focus more attention on driving. My last car was a stick (Hyundai accent) so when I made the leap (and from what I understand a big one at that) I giggled like a schoolgirl the first time I took her out on the highway and let her open up a bit. I'm not ashamed of it. I'm sure everyone here did it at least once even if they won't admit it.
From time to time I have to drive my wife's car for a quick trip or even just to move it. I can't stand it. Partially because I keep hitting the invisible clutch pedal. But mostly because I feel disconnected from the road, almost isolated. She openly admits that my car has a smoother ride with a better suspension, so it does seem counterintuitive.
I must also agree that we (the manual drivers) do tend to become a little arrogant about it. But it is because we are so passionate about it. There really is no passionate argument in favor of automatics. So we have a hard time understanding why anyone would want to drive anything else, and perhaps in our arrogance we erroniously equate it with laziness, which is the most readily apparent argument in favor of automatic trannys. We truely mean no personal disrespect or injury to any automatic drivers out there.
So whether you drive an a stick or an auto, a bimmer or another brand, enjoy what you drive. Happy motoring

I drive a 6 speed MT and do enjoy the feeling of control and being a part of the driving process. I live in Seattle, with steep hills and a lot of traffic. Sticks suck for that.
Now the new SMG III in the M5 is suppose to be smooth and fun. No human can shift as smooth as a computer and maintain the rpms, plus we can't shift fast enough with a high horsepower car such as the new M5.
