Buying My First E36

So this week i am going to buy my first E36 328i.

However i joined this forum to see if i could get some help so i dont end up getting ripped off as i have not owned a BMW before.

There are 2 i have seen one of them looks clean and orginal however the seller does not have the V5 log. but States he has the papers to apply for a new one and has a recent HPI clear cert. Am not that clued up on stuff like this so this is why i have come to the forum i asked him if he could get the V5 and he said he can but it add another owner to the logbook so its not worth it? is this true or does it seem dodgy?

The second one i am looking at is a 1998 and has a LSD with traction control i heard that only the 1995 and below came with LSD so i guess its been an after market fitment i am not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

The main issue i have with it is that it has 67k on the clock but on the papers it has 167k? how could this be on a 1998 surely the clocks have more than 5 figures?

It has 12 months mot and 6 months tax tho so seems genuine. And is 167k on a car of this class a problem?

If anyone can help me out i would really appreciate it.

Thank you.

I am not familiar with the log and the cert to which you refer so cannot comment on those.

The odometer definitely has 6 digits so that sounds fishy. If someone tinkered with that, it makes you wonder what else they did to the car. 167k miles is about what you would expect on a car of this age. One of my '97s has 150k and the other has 250k. Both are great cars, but they have had a LOT of rubber and plastic parts replaced. Both have had their entire cooling systems replaced at least once (radiator, water pump, all hoses, etc).

I think that any 328 came with LSD, but I am not certain. My '97s both have it, and even my '04 325 wagon has it. With ASC, it does not really matter if you have LSD unless you intend to thrash the car with the ASC turned off.
