sos please help(electrical problem)

hi every one
i have bmw e36 320i 1998
i have done a huge mistake,i wanted to replace the old battery with the new one an unfortunately i reversed the pole of battery and after a min there was a mass of smoke coming out of my car.
i took it to the show room and they told me the alternator and the main electrical system is gone and i have to pay about 1500 EUR to change the mane electrical part,
do u guys know what is the main electrical part or is there such a thing in a car
couse after that accident the car was starting all the light and every thing was working but the car didn't turn on.
please help and give me some advise

This is a problem that I would take to a shop that specializes in automotive electrics rather than to a dealer. I don't know what they mean by "main electrical system"

You may well have cooked a whole bunch of things. It would not surprise me at all if you end up spending $1500 euros or more. Just be glad your car is not the current generation of BMW with a half-dozen always-hot computers.

The fact that the car won't start worries me. Do the warning lights in the dash illuminate normally and does the engine crank when you turn the key?
