Not usually, that would be odd. The usual culprit is the seatbelts.

The only way to figure out why it's on is to read the stored code. To do that you'll either need a Peake SRS tool ($129 and you get to keep the tool) or you'll need to go to a BMW dealer and have them read the code ($75 and you get to keep... nothing).

go to autozone or somewhere, I know of people that have borrowed them for free, and they had no connections with employees, or anything. Then umm there is a website somewhere that will tell you what the problem is if you type in the code #, I don't know the address of it tho.

I think spieluhr was talking about the website that will tell you what the code is.

Or just post the code here and someone will decipher it for you.

That only works with OBD-2 check engine codes. Autozone can't reset BMW airbag lights.

Does the light stay on all the time or only for a minute or two. If it stays on all the time then you could a have a problem. If it just stays on a minute or two then it is suppose to still work. There was a thread about the forum maybe buying some things like the airbag reset tool and letting people borrowing them, just paying shipping.

If the SRS light is triggered by the passenger seatbelt occupancy sensor then your airbig will still work.

Most likely it's the driver side seat belt latch sensor, though you'll never know for sure until you read the codes. By the way, even if you fix the problem, the light will never reset by itself, you have to reset it with a Peake tool or the BMW diagnostic system.
