it's a button for your transmission (obviously).

If you push it up, you put it into sport mode from what it looks like.

Pushing it down puts it into winter mode.

Keeping it in either of them for an extended period of time may cause damage, not 100% on that one.

Spieluhr got it, only it won't cause any immediate damage, just might hurt your gas milage a bit and wear your tranny a bit faster from higher reving before shifting, but nothing dramatic on either.

I doubt you'll get much use of the winter mode where you are, Zeaq

LOL!!!Haha!!!!No winter all year round and summer all the time.
I assume other E36s here do not have winter mode since mine is a UK spec car.

The button means you have 2 pedals.

I don't think it was an option, I thought all autos came like that.

I don't believe US cars had that exact switch. European Spec cars came with ZF 5-speed automatics while the US Spec cars got 4-speed autos.

Our buttons have A(Similar to sport mode) <>M(Manual) on them. While yours has S(Sport)<>W(winter).

So is this:"ZF 5-speed automatics=S(Sport)<>W(winter)."
