Your Ride: 1996 328is
1996 328is Trunk lock will not open
Inserting the key into the trunk lock and turning it will unlock or lock the doors but pushing the trunk lock button will no longer engage the locking mechanism enough to unlock the trunk. Any ideas how to get it open? Saw another post that showed how to use a 25 mm hole drill to expose the bar that you can lift to open the trunk lock. Is there another way?

You're probably not too thrilled at the prospect of drilling a hole in your car. How 'bout some less surgical but a bit gymnastic approaches? Do you have the fold-down rear seats, or, failing that, how 'bout removing the rear seat to get into the trunk and finagle the lock that way?

Mystery parts - 1996 328is trunk lock won't open
Dropped the back seats, crawled into the trunk, peeled back the carpet panel and exposed the trunk lock mechanism. The bar connecting the button to the latch was still in place but seemed stuck. After trying it a few times, I reached down closer to the latch and felt a small part that was jammed into the mechanism. I moved it out of the spot where it was jammed and the latch opened and I was able to open the trunk. When I opened it, two loose parts dropped out (tried to attach photos but every format I tried was deemed to not be a valid image file). One part was a thin spring about 1-7/8 inches long and the other looks sort of like a large thumbtack with a head that has two notches in it that look like something fit in them to maybe turn it. Any idea what these go to? Everything seems to be working fine without them but it goes against my basic DIY rules to account for every part even if it seems like everything is working because it will always come back to haunt you. Thanks.

I agree with you on accounting for every part, otherwise something will come back to bite you. About the only thing I can suggest as a hint where those parts go is to consult the schematic found on http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...10&hg=41&fg=60. That way you might be able to connect the dots, or get the nos. for replacement parts.
