New to bmw world question

hey everyone, i will soon be purchasing either a 96-97 325is, or 328is, and was just wondering what the difference is betwen the two. also, how difficult is it to get these cars to push the 300hp mark, and how much would it cost.

Straight off a 325i has a 2.5 liter engine, a 328i a 2.8

as to your question... a 325 has i think 183 hp... and a 328 has 190... so right off the bat.. the 328 is better.. and has more torque...

as to getting it to 300 hp

your looking at the basics...
-intake
-chip
-exhaust
-cams
-pulley
-and prolly a few more things...

just to let u know a little bit about bimmers... bimmers are not a inexspensive toy.. they are exspensive to fix.. and parts for the car are also extremely exspensive.. don't exspect to get a CAI from ebay, and expect hp, like little honda civics...

to properly hook up a bimmer.. u need money and time.. hope u got some!

Very few E36's have pushed the 300 mark without FI that I have heard of. I've heard it's easier to extract more power out of a 325, but you have less to start with. The 328 already has just over 200 torque, and it makes the 325 feel like a slug.

If you get a OBD2 328i and drop a T28 turbo (or similar) and exhaust into it, it'll be pushing around 300hp at the crank. For parts and labor you're probably talking around $5-6k, but that thing would haul ass.

Though if you're looking that hard for power, consider the E36 M3 (around the same years, preferably 95), as those are easiest to get to the higher HPs and they handle the power better.

I've never heard of anyone pushing the 2.5 or 2.8 to 300hp without F/I.

Until recently only the ODBI cars (2.5) were capable of putting out huge HP numbers, now that tuners have finally mastered OBDII (2.8) you're seeing the same numbers as the OBDI cars I don't know what that translates to in terms of price differences though.

If your going FI, and on a budget, I'd venture to say buy a cheaper 325 and invest the rest in the kit. If deep down your know your full of hot air and FI isn't gonna happen, get the 328

im sure with all bolt ons, cranked up timing, custom or performance cams, performace head components.. valve springs, valves, tappets etc, and with race fuel its very possible, but 300HP is virtually unattainable for everyday reliable driving.

with a 2.8L the way to go would be s52 cams, OBDI ecu, exhaust, injectors, m50 manifold, CAI, and headers... that would probably put you at around +- 250hp.

With FI you would be SIGNIFICANTLY lowering the life of your engine if you run stock internals. FI probably wouldnt be the best choice for a DD.

300 HP without F/I isn't really possible. You could obtain a Euro Conversion from bmpdesign.com or whatever it is for about 2600 bucks and that adds tons of HP without forced induction. From that you can build on and get real close to 300HP. Or just add a turbo of some sort but like others have said, not worth it for a DD unless you're like me :P I have done TONS of mods to my car and I don't think I'm cranking out 300HP yet. If I were to guess, I'm somewhere in the neighborhood of 270crank hp, but that's just a guess. Good luck man.

an m3 can reach 300 crank hp without F/I so you might want to buy an m if you can afford it, and want those numbers without going F/I. or else i would get either a 325 or 328 do some pretty extensive engine mods to it, but also dont forget about brakes and suspension, horsepower is nothing if you cant slow down and take a corner

a small turbo can be a good idea if you want it to be. What i mean by this get ready to spend a lot of money!!! most people dont realize what comes with a turbo kit. I know a few guys around here who did the project themselves and pieced together a kit and there car was done for about 3-4 months. Not including all the tuning... Which leads me into tuning the Turbo. You will want to get your turbo tuned to your car and other mods... This isnt as easy as it sounds as a lot of places car charge upwards of 500$ an hour just to get your car to run right. If you want a pretty fast DD car i would recommend intake exhuast cams all the supporting software suspension brakes, fan delete pullies, short throw shifter nice tires all these are things you can do to your car that you will feel a difference while driving.
