E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
So I have an appointment tomorrow at a local car place to get my computer system finished up. They're wanting to keep my car for 7 hours to do all the labor. When it's done it's going to have a custom built/fabricated mount for the computer in the trunk, tapped into my N2 headunit, setup for a wireless keyboard within the car, integrated 802.11g, and everything else hooked up. The only thing I'll need to do is splice and wire in my new opus power supply with a startup and shutdown controller. With that, basically when the car turns on, it'll wait a few seconds and push the power button on the computer, resuming it from hibernate mode. When I turn off the car, it'll wait about 10 seconds and push the power button to make it hibernate.
Basically tomorrow all the wiring and mounting is going to be done. Tomorrow night I'm going to wire in and connect/mount the new power supply. Then I should be done and ready to rock with it for the southeast meetup on Saturday. Almost done.

what about the touch screen. You said teh computer is tapped into your N2. That's cool and all, but what about that cool touch screen you had installed.
and I beg to differ, because your car is far from over. I see it becoming something really unique.

sweet my friend had a similar set up in his 300zx, it was mounted in the trunk... and i was on BMW-forums in his car while out cruisen ...good times BTW you can wire some USB cameras to the computer for video usage...just permenantly mount a few cameras about and when ever someone tries to race you, open up the program of choice and RECORD!

You have three choices, stand behind our troops, grab a gun and toe the line with our troops, or stand in front of them, they can use the extra armor.
Harry, it might be good to post hardware specs you chose for that computer on Geek Chat for those of us who want to give this a go. Like for instance, did you go with ATA or SATA, and things you considered because of the harsher environment the PC has to withstand. I'm assuming it's not an off-the-shelf unit?

The car itself is no where near done, I'm talking about the computer setup is almost done. hah, and it uses the touchscreen too for a mouse. The audio output from the computer is connected to the n2.
And yes, 400GB, 2- 200GB ATA hard drives. This space is for MP3's and divx movies. I'm using a Digimax multimedia computer system I had sitting around my room, modified for use in the car of course.
