Cool Upgrage time: Brakes

That's right Komodo, you are not the only one around here that upgrades! lol, jk man.

But my next upgrade will be a new set of cross-drilled rotors, stainless steel lines, and aftermarket pads. I am damn near dead set on this decision.

However, I do not know much about the brake products for the e36.

Turner (very reputable) has a great package here for about $450 for the package, $500 with shipping.

Is this a good deal?

What else can everyone recomend?

If you really want some really awesome quality breaks and cash isnt a problem, id go with one of the brembo cross drilled rotors//calipers, but some of them can get pricy. They have great reviews though.

Too bad we aren't all komodo, huh.

Seriously, though, how dead set are you on cross drilled? You would probaly be fine with OEM blanks instead. If you really want more stopping power than that, you can try some slotted rotors.

i dont see how getting slotted rotors are going to give you more stopping power.... im pretty sure that the only benefit from slotted rotors is that they cool down a bit faster

Unless you want slotted or xdrilled rotors for looks, then theyre a waste of money.. blanks work just as well. SS lines, rebuilt brakes (if they need it), and good pads are about all you can do minus new calipers.

no, they are not a waste of money, they dont trap the heat as much as the stock ones, and that leads them to get warped less(rotors get warped when you are constantly on the brakes and the brakes get to hot) and even then, ceramic pads are tough on the rotors, and teh x-drilled ones can handle it

Cross drilled rotors are great looking and do heat and cool faster (lower thermal mass), but they also crack faster. I have Brembo slotted and vented rears fitted and I must say, that they offer no real performance increase over the BMW rotors. The slots aid in keeping the pad material from glassing up as it gets hot. Mintex 1166 pads, an excellent fluid and braided brake lines would be my tip. You will have brakes that will stand up to doing track days then. If you can get the Brembo slotted rotors for about the same price as the BMW ones, buy them, they look good. (go and find the photos of mine on the site).

Have a look at this site, it's quite good for information.

I believe my current rotors are warped, and I don't want to have to go through that again. Which is why I think cross drilled would be a good idea. But I did not know that they crack easier, how does this happen?

rotors will warp with age and use.... if you live in a hilly area, and or in a place with a lot of stop signs or street lights, you will be using your brakes more often, not letting the rotors cool down... slotted rotors will help, but honestly, i dont think it would be worth spending a whole bunch of money on.... slotted rotors are not going to last you forever, all rotors will need to be replaced after some use just like brake pads.
