Car Computer Updates

I just went by microcenter and picked up a few needed items for my car computer project. Check this thread if you don't know about it already.

http://files.unitedbimmer.com/ub.c/k...compstuff2.jpg

These are the new things I got:

-a NICE wireless keyboard with a built on laptop-style mouse. The wireless receiver will be mounted behind the rear seats so it'll be usable anywhere in the car... people can just pass the keyboard around and sit typing with it on their laps. :)
-a high quality triple-shielded ultra-thin vga extension cable (expensive :()
-a ps/2 extension cable for the mouse input from the touch screen moniter. Basically when you touch the screen, it registers as a mouse click, and this cable is for sending that input to the trunk-mounted computer.
-a biometric authentication fingerprint scanner. i'm not sure if this is going to be used in the car computer setup or my home desktop, but it looked really damn cool so i got it. :D

Now the only things I have left to do is get a mount custom made for the computer and get the OPUS power supply that'll handle the voltage regulator and startup/shutdown controller. Almost there. :rock :rock

I've thought about that and talked to people about it, but the finger print scanner requires power all the time which would kill the battery if I don't drive for a few days... the keypad doesn't. We thought about ways to hook up a switch to flip on the power for the scanner and such, but it all involved getting the computer to start up first which required about 10 seconds to leave hibernate mode. I don't wanna get in the car and have to sit there for 10 seconds before I can start it. We decided to do the keypad ignition first, get that working, and look into fingerprint ignition systems later. :)

xsperf 07-08-2005 04:28 PM

wait, but the keypad thing will work with stickshift right?

94bmw325i 07-08-2005 04:49 PM

For it to work with stick shift I guess it would just be like remote start on alarms for stick shift, it just bypasses the clutch.

xsperf 07-08-2005 05:18 PM

well for BMW's, you can start em even if the clutch pedal isnt depressed, its only american/japanese cars where your foot has to be like freakin squashing the clutch to the firewall
