Fan Delete question

What is the purpose of the fan delete, performance? I've heard about it but I'm not sure of it's purpose...

It started as a performance mod on racetracks, to reduce parasitic drag thereby increasing horsepower. Not a whole lot though, probably about 5-7 extra horses. But people started doing it on the street, since the E36 fan is known to disintegrate abruptly and cause catastrophic damage.

Don't quote me on this. But from what ive heard, becasue the fan runs off of power from the belts like the alternator and water pump do, by removing the fan it frees up more energy. Its kinda like an underdrive pulley (easiest way for me to explain it) it basicly allows more of the engine power to be used for other applications in the engine bay rather than running the fan needesly.

I've done and I noticed a difference with no bad side effects

i have done the fan delete mod. i have not noticed an problems yet even in stop and go traffic on 31 degree celsius days. this mod allows the engine to rev up much more quickly. if you do decide to do this make sure to get the whole kit which includes a new lower temp switch for the electric fan and water wetter. with all that you should be good to go. if you ever do have any problms with over heating i have heard that it only takes about 15 min to put it back on.

Yeah, I've done it and it does free up the revs a noticable amount. I think it's worth it. I've also been sitting in traffic in 90* heat and my car temperature needle didn't move a BIT from pegging straight up in the middle.

This is a trick develped by the PTG race team's engine specialists for all E36 I6 engines and is dyno proven. The reduction in parasitic drag is equivilent to a 6-8hp increase. Removing the driven fan does reduce the cooling efficiency somewhat, but only while the car is moving less than about 10MPH. However by lowering the thermostat temperature, using Red Line Water Wetter and by using a lower temperature fan switch the risk of overheating is eliminated. It is advised that those running forced induction or living in very hot areas of the country (southern FL, AZ, etc) either skip this mod or add an additional high CFM aftermarket electric fan. Another option is to reinstall the fan only during the hotest weeks of the summer while leaving the fan switch and thermostat in place. It only takes about 15 minutes to remove or reinstall the fan itself.

In addition to performance increase removing the fan eliminates the risk of the fan blades coming in to contact with the radiator due to a broken motor mount or faulty waterpump bearings. The fan blades can do significant underhood damage if they contact the radiator or if a broken fan belt wraps around them. Also changing belts is very easy with the fan out of the way.
