Problems with Central Locking with the remote

I'm the proud new owner of a 1997 318ti. It's in excellent shape and just turned 100k miles on the odo. Very happy with it.

One problem I'm having is with the keyless entry. If I try to lock or unlock with the remote the alarm chirps 3 times. If I use the key in the drivers side door, passenger side or hatch, central locking appears to be working fine. The hatch and driver's side door unlock/lock. The passenger side door does not, but I presume this is just a failure in the actuator in that door.

Does the three chirps mean something specific? How can I troubleshoot this problem? The 3 fuses for central locking look good.

It looks like I fixed the problem. The the "hood is closed" sensor wasn't triggering. I bent the arm up slightly and the remote now locks/unlocks successfully.

I presume three beeps means "something's open stupid". Actually, a nice feature.
