E36General discussion and technical help for (E36) 1992-1999 3 series cars. 318, 323, 325, 328.
whats up guys..
i looks like theres a few out there who have smoked there own tail lights... what i was looking into is smoking the top where there turn signal and reverse lights are.
i saw one guy with his car and he smoked his lights that were already OEM CLEARS
mine still have the amber/orange signals on the side, is it possible to smoke these without it looking like crap?

well it depends on how dark you want it.. if you want it somewhat light it might not look all that great but if your looking to make it dark enough to mide the fact that there is the amber color than you might want to go for it....
if you dont mind experimenting you might want to just buy a can of the spray tint stuff and see for your self

my friends sprayed his stock lights on his 2002 2.5 rs, he put the spray right over the orange markers, and you could tell there was another color under it... he also did it outside where it was kind of dusty, so the job didnt come out that good... i think doing it over clears would be your best choice... but you can always do it to your stock ones now, and then if you dont like it buy clears and do it to them.
i did it over my clears and im happy with them. the only difference on yours will be when it blinks, itll blink orange through the black. i used testors model master paint. buy it at any decent hardware store or whatever, and obviosly mask off the areas u dont want sprayed. do light layers very evenly at first, and when u are satisfied with the darkness, spray a clear coat over the black at least 2 layers thick. this will prevent the paint from flaking off. i have a pic of mine done if u want
I wanted to do all-red (as opposed to red/amber).... I think el presidente did this... I wonder how it would look red painted over amber though (I think pres had red/clear to start with)
hmm id really like to do these, i either want to smoke my current amber OEMS, or by clears and leave them clear. the smoked design would be more unique, and match considering my corners are also smoked, and its a black car.
does this tint stuff make it harder to see your turnsignal/reverse lights?

It might dim them a bit, but it wouldn't make it that much harder.
What I'd recommend is taking your oem lights and sanding down the inside of them until they're clear, then smoking (paint) the inside. That way weather wouldn't be a factor, and you'd start from a clear base. I'm almost positive the orange would show through no matter what if you keep it, unless you COVER it in paint, at which point you won't be able to see the lightbulb. If it doesn't work, or if you mess it up... then you can either buy the clears or smoked afterwards.
Actually, I just had an idea. How do you think it would look to buy clears and actually "smoke" them. Like get fire and hold it below the lense and darken them with the smokey swirly tint.... that might look badass if done correctly....
