Ran my code reader this morning before my appointment - 3 new codes
Well folks, the bimmer is heading for the local dealer... I check the codes again this morning, as the performance has slowly become worse. Here is what I found -
Ignition coil - cylinder 5 - (dealer code 31)
Misfire cyl #1 - (dealer code 238)
Misfire cyl #5 - (dealer code 242)
Secondary Air System Flow too low (Cyl 1-3) - (dealer code 245)
Secondary Air System Flow too low (Cyl 4-6) - (dealer code 246)
Large Evap leak detected - (dealer code 254)
Hum, actually it might not be so bad at all.... if something is leaking in the secondary airflow system, it would inturn cause misfires everywhere because the engine is starved for air. That would explain almost every code there. Maybe a tube pulled loose or something.

But there again, I'm being optimistic.
well, since the misfire in cyl 1 showed up a month or so ago and the leak code is new, I am suspecting something went wrong with a hose somewhere recently, and that the ignition coils are starting to go. I have 112k miles on her now, and they have never been replaced.

the secondary intake system has nothing to do with the misfire. you have two seperate problems there billycuth.
Your secondary air flow too low code is telling you that your air pump, located on the rear drivers side of the engine compartment is either dead or dying. What I would do is check ALL vacuum lines, especially the ones connected to the no-return valve and the ones under the intake manifold. here is a link that tells you some symptoms of a failing air pump and how to replace one, unfortunately for you (and me ), it is very expensive. On the bright side however the only problem it posts is that you might not pass emisions until it gets fixed. The reason for that is because the purpose of the air pump is to pump air (who would have thought) into the exhaust manifolds to aid in the catalyzation process, thus giving you cleaner exhaust.

i just replaced that an pump last year... are there 2 of them?
you were right on about it though, it was an air pump... for them to put my new rotors on, fix the air pump, and an oil change (since it is due and has been there over a week now - $1202
less 10% for bmwcca - $1082.8
fing crazy.
plus, I spent $700 on new coils! ARGH!!!! this thing better run like a dream when I am done...
